Men have had a monopoly on Sheikh al-Mahalla’s position since the beginning of this administrative function, owing to the costs involved in resolving disputes between families and dealing with the masses, in addition to other administrative tasks, in order to interfere with Samya as the first woman in these tasks, in contravention of the customs of the majority of Libyan society.
